Why CoPilot

Last Changed 3/10/2017

We had been using Microsoft Streets & Trips as well as Delorme's Street Atlas USA.  Personally, we prefer Streets & Trips for ease of use.  Both did very good jobs of routing.  Unfortunately, neither has any data on roads that have less than 13' 6" height clearances.

We started using ALK CoPilot with our original motorhome, Training Wheels in 2003.  Training Wheels was only 10' 6" tall but we worried about low bridges in our travels.

We had a 10'1" bridge near the house.  We picked a route to a business just on the other side of the bridge such that the very obvious route from the house to the business was under the bridge.  CoPilot picked a route around the bridge.

CoPilot does do the job.  The speech function does help to keep your eyes on the road.  We added some powered speakers when we changed from laptop to the truck computer since the laptop speakers are too small.  That helped a lot with speech quality.

When we started, Red Rover and Tige were 13' 3" tall, we felt that a navigation software program that would include height in its routing was important.

We are continuing to use ALK CoPilot with Joey, our Bounder but we have evolved to using the Android version of CoPilot.  We decided to merge the pages assigned to GPS navigation into a common section..

It does look like there are some good features in CoPilot.  The Truck version had the Driver mode.  In Passenger Mode, the display is similar to Streets & Trips and Street Atlas in that the map stays displayed and the vehicle motions is indicated.  In Driver Mode, once the speed is over 5 Mph, CoPilot changes to a very large and clear display of arrows and directions that the driver can quickly scan.  This makes Co-Pilot easier for solo driving.

We currently have the 2009 version of Street Atlas USA.  Delorme has added a navigation mode more like CoPilot but not as good for solo driving.  Street Atlas still lacks a height database.

In the mean time, we had wished Delorme or Microsoft would elevate the capabilities of their software but a height knowledgeable road database is not in the future of either of those products.  In both cases, both products went to end-of-life.
