When you are under trees, things will drop from the trees and collect on the top of your slides. If you close the slides with that stuff on the top of your slides, it could cut the upper seals on your slides. Toppers are awnings that are attached to the RV side and the upper edge of the slide. As the slide extends, the topper opens and provides a cover to the slide. |

Our toppers have a shield which dresses up the topper and also controls wind from getting under the topper. There can be issues with toppers. The stuff that would have fallen on the slide now falls on the topper. Depending on the amount of stuff, you may (or should) remove the stuff before closing the slides. The toppers are sprung awnings and heavy rain (or as we found in Colorado, snow) can cause the topper to sag and catch the rain. There are various techniques to put a hump in the center of the topper to prevent buildup. Also, in strong winds, the slide toppers will flap. Our toppers were Summit models from Care Free of Colorado. There is an option we wish we had known about... that as the Summit topper extends, a lift bar comes out and raises in the center of the topper. For when we stay in our Retama Village lot in Mission Texas, we made a topper support out of PVC pipe that does what the Summit lift bar option would have done. |
