We had the factory supplied shocks on the Bounder's Ford F53 chassis
replaced with Koni shocks tuned for the Bounder. The ride was
considerably softer, less shocks to the body when driving some of
the seriously bad roads in America. But the software shocks also made the Bounder feel more tippy in turns. There is a very popular sway bar adjustment in the Ford F53 user community called the Cheap Handling Fix (CHF).. There are two sets of holes on the standard sway bar arms. Normally the links to the frame are attached to the outer holes in the sway bar arms. The CHF moves the links to the inner holes on the sway bar arms. The logic is that the shorter effective arm means the sway bar has more resistance to body roll. |
||
This is the CHF applied. What we did not like about the CHF is that as the links are moved from the outer holes where the links are almost vertical to the sway bar arms, when the links are attached to the inner holes, the links are almost in line with the sway bar arms. This moved the vector action of the links to be pushing at the axle to which the sway bar is attached more than pushing down on the sway bar arm causing a twisting action. The CHF may work but we did not like the long term possibilities. | ||

We choose to have a
Roadmaster 1139-148
installed. The cost was a lot more that the Cheap Handling Fix
but you can see that the links are vertical to the sway bar arms as
they were with the factory supplied sway bar. The new sway bar
also came with polyurethane bushings for longer life. To us, Cheap is not something we consider in things like suspension changes. |
